Keep in mind if the lifters have no oil in them, they probably will move, so they're probably fine

rebuild them! its simple, get to cans of carb choke cleaner, pull the HLA out (remember which way the spring goes, blast the check ball, reassemble HLA, submerigine in oil, use a paper clip to push in the check ball while pumping them under oil til they get stiff. or send me some cash and ill rebuild them for you. Just number them before pulling them out of the head.

"cleaned" would be a better way to put it. The B series HLA's are prone to loading up and clogging with crap due to the tiny orifice in them. Mazda revised them down the line with a larger orifice in the later BP's and KL's (I believe they used same or similar HLA's) Restricted flow to the HLA's internals causes the cams to slap the top - making a lifter "tick" common on the B6T

Either way, they come apart easily. Squeeze them under oil a couple times to fill them up before re-assembly. I've never numbered them when pulling/reinstalling them personally and I've not had an issue. They are intended to constantly rotate in the lifter bore to avoid wear on the top of the lifter.

If you see some with an hourglass figure worn into the top, they should be replaced.

you stretch out the spring too which freshens them up a little bit, I did it to most of mine even if they didn't need it.
