For all jokes people are making, the easiest way to find out what's wrong is to keep driving but with the radio up real loud. Sooner rather than later you will physically be able to pinpoint what needs fixing.

Hahahahahaha thats about the same thing that happened to me. Driving from one job to the next one day the axle was making all kinds of noise then when i got off my second job i put the car in reverse let out the clutch and a loud noise and the car would not move. Replaced the axle and all was good.

This is one of the long pole type things leading from the shifter.


I'm no genius, but I'm thinking there should be some sort of bigger bolt to hold that end on.

I'm also thinking of doing the fix for the "shifter falls through the floor" to tighten up that whole thing once my short shifter arrives. Any cons to that fix?

OK, I need someone to tell me what this piece is called.


This is the transmission end of the long rod from the shifter. It relays the forward/backward motion of the shifter. I'm missing the rubber piece that sits inside this. Without this rubber thing, I not only have a lot of slop in the shifter, but there's nothing REALLY securing it there. I can't even look for the part until I find out what to call it! Please let me know.

Rockauto.com has the steering rack boots, The rod that runs with the shifter, I believe is called the transmission stablizer. Not sure where you can get the bushing for it.

Shift Stabilizer Bar. The bolt is the right size, but if it is loose, the bushing inside is worn, rotted. I highly recommend you pick up a Haynes manual. Pretty good if you can turn a wrench and follow instructions, then you can decipher more of what car guys say

They're called shifter bushings plus shoulder bolt. OEM is nylon (or something like it) and there are posts here about aftermarket bronze ones. Many Mazdas use those same parts so if you ask for, say, 93 Mx3 or Protege you'll likely get the correct ones. Bring the old ones with you for comparison and while you're at it get a second set for the joint right under the gear shift. That is the one that usually wears out first! If you have a really sloppy shifter that is the first place to look.

For years, I just had a bunch of washers that barely fit inside, and two bigger ones on the outside. Worked kinda a'ight.

I doubt that is his noise, though. These usually make a clunky sound when you move the shifter.

15R is the mos designation for maintenance/crewchief on apaches. Phoenetically R is Romeo. Thus all.crewchiefs are commonly called romeos. I was 15Y, or Yankee.

You mentioned helo parts. Parts Thx a Romeo would typically be very familiar with. Bankers, not so much.

No wires go to a swashplate and therefore not my thing.

I probably should have put the shifter thing in a separate thread. I found a generic "shock bushing" kit that will likely work. More to follow.

As far as the noise.....definitely cv boots. Mine are destroyed. Will I need to put the car on jacks to replace those arms? Or can I use a pair of ramps? Ramps are much easier and less scary. Finding even ground for repairs in my hood is challenging. I have a garage, but it is currently occupied.

Advanced Auto Parts has this. There's 4 bushings in the package. I took the pic after I installed them


I shaved about 1/8 inch from the outside of the bushings and they were perfect.


Problem solved. Problem staying solved.
