Well, yesterday I was on a one hour drive from Houston to Conroe. Once I was about fifteen minutes from Conroe, I thought I noticed an odd noise like scatching and chirping while driving down the interstate. When I got off on the feeder and proceeded to slow down and take it out of fifth gear, the noise was much more evident and it was hard to shift as I slowed to a stop. I mean very hard, as the shifter kept grinding.
Well, here's what I learned after some process of elimination: my clutch pedal wasnt necessarily soggy or anything. Also, my brake fluid levels were fine. The grind noise from the tranny sounds like that noise when to spinning gears just BARELY come into contact with each other, creating that high whining sound.
So I popped off the speedometer cable and checked the tranny fluid. It looked like there wasnt much in there. I stuck a screwdriver in as far as it could go, and only the tip got wet. Odd, considering I was sure I filled it up all the way four months back. After a friend in Conroe brought me some transmission fluid, we put around 1 1/2 quarts and tried again. Still noisy and very noticeable, but slightly easier to shift. His house wasn't far, so I gave it a shot. By the time I got to his place, my transmission got much quieter.
So it looks like I've developed a tranny fluid leak, I assume. I just hope my transmission is okay. I noticed the shifting was sometimes slightly inaccurate this past week, but I thought it was me. And of course I just drove it an hour to my friends house in fifth gear, but like I said, it was quiet at the beginning of the trip.
Any common leak places besides the drain bolt and end seals?
