  • speedo quit this morning

So this morning headed to work running down the road and I look down and my speedo is at 0 and my odometer has stopped. I am guessing I just need a cable, haven't had a chance to look at it yet. Has this happened to you guys and can you still get a cable for it anywhere besides a junkyard?

Now I would just check to see if the cable may have popped out on either the transmission or cluster side of the cable before replacing it.

You can get a speedo cable from autozone, but it is $30 and has to be special ordered, and only for manual transmissions.

You could probably get a used one off of someone here for cheaper.

what would be wrong if the speedo symptoms are it starts at 5mph and goes to 35mph no matter how fast you are driving and the tach stays at 2000rpm and doesnt move no matter how fast 1988LX 5 speed manual.

sounds like a bad cluster, but you should inspect your cable and gear teeth as well as check the diff ring gear that drives the speedo cable gear.

What about the part that the cable screws into in the transmission. What is it actually called? My tab that holds it in place is broke so I've like to replace it while I am in there.

More than likely your cable snapped. What happened to me 3 years ago the speedo nylon tooth wheel that goes into the tranny split. This resulted in a shaky speedo needle. Cleared right up when I put in another drive unit.

I was not aware that a speedo cable for an auto was different from a manual. I have previously swapped a tranny speedo gear unit (not the cable) from an auto into a manual but I don't recall seeing anything different about the cables.
If it's a manual Festy apparently the gear unit from a manual Aspire will also work. Auto Aspire is different (I know that for sure because I have a speedo gear off one in my parts bin). I'd like to hear what anybody has found out regarding Rio cable compatibility (if in fact the speedos are still mechanical)

A Festy tach is entirely electric. Gear-driven tachs disappeared from the scene a very long time ago.
