Congrats! I had the same issue today. I fought with it for an hour trying to finesse it out. Finally used a nail bar as a pry bar and smacked it with the full swing of a large rubber hammer. The splined cup shot out of the transaxle like cannon ball and flew across the garage, LOL. No way could i have gotten it out if the motor was still in the car and not hanging on the engine hoist. The other side popped right out with a few gentle taps and slight pressure. I've heard that remanufactured axles are the ones that give problems because the clips are usually bigger. Not sure if that's true.

WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY to often, for many cars. I run into it so MUCH!

I think Arty does the same as I do. If a new/reman axle doesn't click right in, I pinch the ciclip a little bit at a time, making the gap smaller a touch each time, until she slips right in, like a ....wait, this is a family forum, right?

I looked at the axle stub today, and the clip is waaaay bigger than it should be. I tried to pinch it smaller, but it won't go much smaller. The axle was a rebuilt one from Autozone that I installed when I changed the clutch about 20K miles ago. The old axle was still good, I just figured it would be smart to put a new one in at the time. I saved the old axle....so I think I'll put the old axle back in this time. If there's a problem with the B6 I rebuilt, and I have to pull the motor again or maybe install an upgraded clutch, I don't want to have to fight to get the axle out again. Maybe I can replace the clip on the newer axle and keep it as a spare.

You could just use the clip off the old axle....

I wonder if it would pay to reach in through the side gear with something and break the sharp edge around the hole so it won't dig in to the cir clip when you try to pull out the axle the next time.
