Thanks... I'll get 'er figured out eventually. It's so frustrating to have three cars all with something wrong!

Yes it is, the mounting bracket goes behind the overflow tank. May not be your issue, but its worth checking.

Ok.. did check and it's clicking. I wacked it with the ratchet . just to make me feel a little better at least. Doesn't mean it's good. I think I got the Focus fixed so the Festiva may just set for a while. My parts car is down at the farm and with another snow storm coming may be the middle of March before I get down there.

eric, check your ICM!!!! power to the coil (black/white wire) is ignition switch controled. the yellow/green wire is the coil ground control and it can be checked with a test light. my first recomendation is for you to get to the nearest junk yard and nab a pair of ICMs from early 90s mazda cars. then swap one in and test for spark.

            No spark after snow storm

Sorry forgot to mention I replaced the icm from a junker still nothing. Going to eventually do some more test on disty.. It's either there or the coil or a hidden relay.

Sorry don't mean to hijack the thread but I am having the same problem and just wanted to know the name of this relay I can't a main relay when i search for it in parts. Is there another name it's called ?

              Thanks.

Make sure both circuits are working out of the ignition switch.

I let it set a week and tried starting it today. Ran for 5 seconds... at least! Barely ran at that. Going to continue letting it set until next weekend. Supposed to warm up into the 60's which should help.

Ok I'm stumped but still have to replace the coil, maybe the VAF and maybe the gas filter. It will run advanced all the way, almost but not quite there. The timing belt is still aligned correctly, replaced the distributor same symptoms. How could it go from running perfectly to over night to this? Guess there's always the possibility of a corroded wiring harness but haven't seen any corrosion anywhere. Bah why can't I ever have a easy fix!

I've replaced the dist., cap, entire coil assembly, and vaf. I've pulled the connections around the battery and all are dry. Thinking of the fuel filter but that doesn't line up with any of the symptoms. Tried grounding the timing wire by the brake booster and it flat out die's. Ran fine when parked and some snow and hasn't ran right since. End of May insurance is up and it joins the Aspire and parts Festiva on the farm.

You say it ran 5 seconds or less.
May have already been mentioned here but if not.. has anyone mentioned the fuel pump relay?

If it runs five seconds your spark must have been solved? Could be more than one problem?

While cranking, fuel pump circuit ground is provided at the fuel pump relay to operate the fuel pump. After the engine starts, fuel pump circuit ground is provided through the fuel pump switch located in the Vane Airflow Meter.

Interesting to know.. It does run though. Something is causing the timing to be off majorly. Could run it that way but probably burn a hole in a piston.

time for a compression test!! and i suspect you're still off a tooth if the timing is that off.

This happened to me on my 1990 surf blue many years ago an it turned out to be that the crank timing sprocket key was half way worn away.
