  • Gauge Cluster Swap Question

I'm considering swapping my cluster out for one with a tachometer. Is it possible or easy to roll back miles on the new cluster to match my actual mileage? And how about just the cluster swap in general, is it difficult?

Have you ever seen the movie Ferris Bueler's Day Off?

It's easy to change to the tach cluster as long as you remember to first undo the speedometer cable at the transmission and push in the release levers for both of the electrical connectors on the back of the cluster before pulling them off. Don't break the tabs or you will regret it.

Replace all the darkened or burnt out bulbs before installing the tach cluster.

Yes, and I ALWAYS have the Star Wars theme ready to play if I anticipate all 4 wheels leaving the ground.

You've seen how the mechanical odometers work. If you could remove the pin holding the gears together, and wind them forward, they would start to flip to all zeros again starting from the right. This is not what you want. I wouldn't even bother. Just make a note.

The odometer on my Aqua is about 50,000 miles less than actual. Is advancing the miles easier to do?

And all along I thought you were going to wind it back. Silly Ferris! Dr. Festy will pull the pin out, disengage all the wheels, and set it to whatever you want.

^ lol no I don't think he even does that, he uses a magic pic like a wand, waves it over the cluster, taps it twice, and BAM... it says what he wants it to say!

Why don't you just swap the current speedometer gear into the new cluster?

swapping the gear won't work so well with the tripometer reset... the units aren't compatable without alot of parts swapping.

Just wondering....Aqua has a salvage title now so it doesn't make much difference. I noted the miles on the original odometer (and I still have it) so it's no big deal.

Don't forget to reroute the Speedocable for the tach cluster.

Since I have no problems with my existing cluster, its looking like it'll be easier to install an aftermarket tachometer. Any suggestions on location? I'm sure there's been some cool tach solutions on here.

Wow. That would qualify as cool.

You also have to swap orange to orange and white to white clusters. Cant mix without rewiring.
