It takes about twelve hours to make a good batch of grease. A lot depends on the milling time in order to get a good grind. You don't want lumps of undissolved powder (lithium stearate) in the soap base. Making grease is like making bread. Every batch is a little bit different. Even though the oil added during the let down may have the same viscosity, it is absorbed differently (sometimes way differently). They may even overshoot one spec and have to sell it as another spec, for places where it is much colder. Process studies on many variables such as temperature from the contactor steam jacket to shear as measured by motor loads have failed to perfect the process. A good grease operator is the equivalent of a good baker. You get what you pay for. Cheap grease is usually milled for minutes, rather than hours. Tests and spot checks are far less frequent. Performance testing can be fudged if done on a midnight shift. I always feel the grease between my thumb and forefinger and check for a burnt smell. Watch out for streaking or uneven dispersion of additives. The EP (extreme pressure) additives are always thrown in just at the end, once the cone penetration is at or almost within specification.Last edited by bravekozak; 04-25-2013, 10:26 PM.

you need to perform super maintenance by whipping the poop in violently manner. What does this mean: dont piece mill it. Find quality parts and
replace the bearings in the front and roter, control arm, inner and outer tie rods with boots, cv joints with boots and new life time structs with boots. Buy all the parts first.
Replace the calipers also with new life time guarantee parts. Go to Natrona Height Pa and get the front end alligned for 49.00. Your car will drive lick a new slick whipper
of the show room floor.
Buy all the parts first. then form your action plan (don't threaten to shoot unless you are fully loaded and have the safety off) Your howling will be cured nicely.''

Dr. Zeplen, I am not sure that the original poster will want to drive to PA from St. Louis to get his alignment done.
Besides, no one has mentioned one of the more likely causes of the howling: werewolves. Dan, check under the hood for one before you go out and buy a lot of parts.

Okay...so the howling noise was NOT the rear bearings......
I just replaced the rear bearings with Timken bearings (they did need replacing anyway) and rear brake shoes, and freed up my stuck e-brake lever while I was in there.
The howling noise is still there! (crap) The noise still sounds from the front, and I noticed a funny looking reddish brown staining on my front pass wheel
Did I loose a seal?
Guess I will be checking the front bearings, at least the one on the pass side.
If anyone has a suggestion as anything else it might be, please chime in!Dan

I think replacing all the front end parts is overkill and a waste of money unless diagnosed bad.
Wheels on ground, foot on top of tire. Push hard. Any play? Likely bad bearing.
Wheels off ground. Grab tire at three and nine. Shake back and forth. Any play? You ptobably. Hear clicking, look as you shak and you probably see a bad tie rod or end. No play? They should be good.
Same test at twelve and six for the ball joint in the control arm.
Inspect the tire for imperfections. Spin tire and listen for axle binding. Inspect axle boots.

Well, I was also kind of responding to an earlier post that suggested you just replace all those
Man, your howling noises sound "wheel related," BUT, I have heard "howling" from bad pulleys in the accessory train, and from pilot bearings. Anything sort of bearing related, I guess.

Baby car had a heck of a howl that came from the alternator. I still have the thing, because it works. It is just noisy as all get out.

Ahh...i'll figure it out eventually. Working a lot of hours, tired when I get home. Just dont feel like screwing with it after work.

It was suggested rear bearings, and mine have been on the car since I got it 4 1/2 yrs ago. Been adjusted twice. It was time to replace them. When I pulled the bearing, I could read...Made in China!
