  • 89 wont start

i was driving down the road and my engine cuts off it gets spark fuel and turnsbanana time over but wont start could it be the timing belt

  • #2
I would guess the timing belt didn't break. It MAY have skipped a tooth or 3.

If you're getting a nice steady rhythmic spark while trying to start then belt didn't break.

Some other info that may help to diagnose.

    Fuel injected or carbed?

    What color is the spark?

I'm sure there are other questions, but these are a starting point.

Others with a bit more knowledge will more than likely chime in also.

no injector control (given the statement that you have fuel, meaning fuel pressure.... otherwise look at the fuel pump).

And check the plug connection at the VAF. This can keep you from getting fuel

I had a Zephyr that did something similar to that occasionally, and usually at high speed on the Washington Beltway....very scary! Turned out to be the Electronic Module.....when it heated up, it quit, when it cooled down, the car would start and run till it got hot again.

                    ^ haha no...

since you have EFI, finding the issue should be rather easy, especially since you have spark!

open the hood, go to the driver side strut tower and look for a loose 2 wire connector in the shape of a T (it should be black). take a paper clip and jump those 2 wires. turn the key to the RUN position, you should hear the fuel pump run. if you don't, you need to verify that you have power to the pump by flipping the rear seat all the way forward, flip the carpet forward, remove the pump access cover, and checking for power at the 4 pin plug on your pump housing (use a multi-meter).

post results and further instructions will commense.

May want to try resetting the inertia switch. Simply to make sure.

My '89 F.I. would sometimes start, sometimes wouldn't. Push the inertia switch to reset it and it would start right up. After a few episodes of that I simply unplugged the switch and made a jumper wire to bypass the switch.

weak spark is a coil issue, not ICM

Inertia switch is below the driver rear speaker

how do you test for fuel? have you jumped the test port? (located driver front strut tower, t shaped, black, 2 pin connector)
