Zoe, the buck you felt is primarily from your accelerator pump jet. and i suspect there's an issue with your vaccum advance on your dizzy. the reason you feel it primarily when shifting is because you're attempting to accelerate once in gear and that press of the pedal causes the accel pump to squirt fuel, where when you're pullingout in first, you're feathering the pedal and NOT inducing accel pump activation.

a stumble at steady speed could be ignition timing, or fuel delivery (lack of fuel pump volume). the other option could be a rich miss (too much fuel for the amount of air being induced) from an over active secondary OR poor float pintle sealing (bowl too full).

So, it could be that it isn't getting signal to the diaphragm, or that the diaphragm itself is bad? We had it revving past four grand, which it will only do in neutral. I never saw the secondary spray without me actually manipulating the throttle body.

Even worse today, his mother let him use her car, old glory, and he broke down with my daughter in raleigh. Just towed that one to madness central for further diagnosis tomorrow. I know it is a fuel issue, just need diagnostic equipment to finishit off.

one or both. the secondary won't open unless there's a load on the engine, that's why you didn't see the secondary kick in while reving in neutral.

i'll assume that you already verified cam timing.....

                You assume correctly

So, how would I test it?

test what exactly? the secondary? you should be able to see some actuator movement (if things are working correctly) by snapping open the throttle (wot) and holding it to redline, that shoudl put sufficient load on the engine to make that actuator do it's thing a little bit. i'll have to consult the book for further testing.

Well, when I was out there today, I noticed something I had not noticed before, and believe it or not, I checked for it. I either missed it or it started recently. I don't know how I could have missed it, but I never underestimate my powers of lacking observation.

Arcing. From the coil wire at the coil. Serious arcing. OK, easy fix, new coil wire. No dice. My coil wire, that doesn't arc on my car? No dice. WTH? Swap in another coil. Arcs. ???Swap that other dizzy in again. Arcs. Try a spark plug wire and put the big boot on it. No dice. Wrap the coil at the connection with a few layers of electrical tape to make sure it is sealed. No dice. Wrap a ton of electrical tape around a brand new wire after it is connected. No dice. No matter what, it arcs to the connectors on each side of the coil wire. So bright I could see it during daylight, and now at night? Fireworks!

I swear to the FSM, when it comes to the Bakers cars, I get flummoxed!

it seems that you have several issues at the coil... one being the ICM control wire (a ground). make sure that wire isn't shorted to ground.

Um, I am sorry, can you clarify? Make sure a ground isn't shorted to a ground?

There were broken spots in the wiring on the original dizzy going to the coil, so we just swapped in a new dizzy. Since that didn't work, I wrapped the bad spots first with shrink wrap, after cutting and removing corrosion, then wrapped again in electrical tape.

Will just rebuilt the carb. Still arcs, still has the problems, but the secondary kicks in now.

ok, well we're getting somewhere there....

Paul, what i'm trying to get at is that there is an easier path to ground at the coil than there is through the cap/rotor/wires/plugs and that's why it's arcing. i'd sat start playing with your multimeter a littile more and something should pop out at you. and i'd re-inspect the ground side wire of the coil all the way into the dizzy.
