trans axle problem - can u help?

As I reported in my garage thread the passenger side axle would not come out. I tried all the tricks I could find here and nothing worked. I finally took it to a transmission shop and they could not get it out.
That leaves two options. If the trans is removed can the internals be removed to access the problem? If not anybody got a transaxle to fit a 1993 Festiva? Any suggestions anybody?

They can come out mighty hard. I used a torch and some grinder work, made a huge pry bar out of 1x3 solid bar stock 5ft long.

I feared cracking the case, but the popped out, splines in the final drive sheared grooves through the snap ring. Ring wasn't on center and was holding the whole program up.

Pop the boot off and remove clip inside remove cv joint from housing ! Take new one apart same way and install in your old cv cup put clip in and zip tie boot back on and done !

And no, if the axle stub/s is/are still in the final drive, you can't split the case....

My suggestion on the axel subject. since you have your suspension/knuckle apart to get that axle out hopefully. Leave the axle nut in the hub and use the hub as leverage. Turn it back and forth if you have to and wiggle it out. This should work I have been there bro

rip the inner tripot bearing out of the cv cup, clean the grease out, drill a hole in the side of the cv cup, and use wire or whatever clever way you can figure to out to attach a slide pull hammer to the cv cup. i've had to go that route, NOTHING else would do it.


oh...it took a good 5-10 man sized whacks to get it out, I was sore for two days.. i'd suggest finding a teenager that needs an extra 10$.

If you have teens looking for cash on your corner... you have some "issues" that should be addressed. Also, I see the OP found the toll part number, but so future searchers can find it in more places, it is OTC part no. 7140. It is a magical thing, originally intended for Escort/lynx cars, it should work on the E series trans.

another tip. The reason these joints get "stuck" on is because the circlip tries to walk out of the little grove and it wedges itself in the splines. If the joint doesn't come out with the first swift tug, then push it back in and wiggle it around and spin it (if the other axle is out then slide it back in before spinning the diff). Keep doing this until it comes out. It should never take prying or hammering, if this is the case then the wire circlip is jammed and your only making matters worse until you cut through the clip (notice the burs on the clip after shoehorning the axle out?). I pull festiva axles in the salvage yard all the time, with no issues at all, but I used to do it the hard way until a guy showed me the trick. Once you get the wiggle down, you'll never have another stuck one (unless someone else tugged on it until it stuck and gave up).

Or you could do what I did:

Rent these two part numbers from AutoZone if you have one nearby: 27033 (slide hammer) and 27058 (fwd axle puller!)

Man sized tugs necessary but it worked!
