  • Can you run a/c without a idler pulley as long as you have a smaller belt?

Since the a/c system I bought from dab440 is the rare a/c system from a Festiva that also had power steering, it didn't have a need for a idler pulley.

So my question is, if all the idler pulley does is get rid of the slack in the belt, couldn't I just find a smaller belt that just wraps around the crank, and a/c compressor?

Or does the idler make it much more simple to get the belt on, and off?
Or is there no belt small enough to do that?

Just wondering if anyone else ran an a/c system without an idler pulley or power steering system?

Th. Idler pully also tensions the belt. When the belt streches you can tighen it up.

I have one somewhere but i think that it may not line up correctly. Even with the ps pump i assume that it has to be tifhtned somehow.

So all your hoses go around the drives side of the engine?

Yes, indeed they do, travel along the firewall, through the wires at the coil, down the fender, and around the battery.

When you have PS in addition to AC, belt tensioning is done by tweaking the adjustment capability built into the PS mounting bracket.

                  I also have another question.

Is there a difference between tensioner pulley brackets at all? Or are they all the same?

Because what I have is a factory a/c system, with the nippondenso compressor.

They are different. You want the cast iron one.

                            alright, thank you very much.

Also thanks for putting up with all my questions. lol

Also, this may be a crap time to mention this but, the crank pulley, and compressor pulley are ribbed, not v-belt.
I just noticed that the pulley on the tensioner bracket bravekozak is selling wouldn't work with the type of belt I need to use.

Ughhh, the amounts of variations in these a/c systems makes me want to bash my head into a wall. THANKS ALLOT KIA/FORD!! Can't keep anything %$#%ing consistent.

You might want to look at an aspire Idler pulley, it has the ribbed belt pulley.

It looks to be about the same size bracket and the offset of the pulley seems to be close. Im looking at both of them right now lol. The main difference is the festiva bracket looks a little beefier and it uses a smaller bolt.
