How do I go about priming the old pump when I put it back in?

Pull plugs, kill fuel and ignition, grind on the starter for 20 seconds. Or at least until oil light comes off, or gauge moves. Bump key a few times to see how long pressure bleed off takes place after pumping stops.

I always nod to myself with satisfaction after I stop cranking engine, taking a full 2 seconds before light turns on. Of course 15w40 is cheating on tight bearings and room temperature.

Pull a few important harnesses on coil/dist, undo a fuel line? Pull a relay, more the one-way to skin a cat.

dont have to do that, just jump the battery wire at the starter to the starter signal wire and boom, you have a cranking, but non-running engine, all while everything is hooked up correctly!

Mine sucked oil when it was dry. Well, not "dry", but you get my point.
It took prime. I just poured a capful before setting gears and cover together.
