You should always do this before removing the disty, to prevent the exact problem you are having; then make sure the cam gear doesn't move. Pull the plugs so you won't be fighting compression, because compression will move the cam if you just look at it wrong.
    2. Insert disty. It should only go in with the rotor pointing at the #1 plug wire. If it is pointing 120 degrees away from there, the rotor is on wrong.

It could also be that you have your plug wires on wrong, and that is why it can't be timed. BTW, I think it is possible to put the disty cap on backwards, which would give you ignition timing that was 180 degrees off. (Not saying you did any of these things, just going through the logical possibilities.)
What are you calling the "tick mark"?

Two small nicks on crank pulley.

Ones dead on TDC, 2nd one is the factory advance when dizzy is supported to shoot spark.

The two will be aligned so that one is at 12:00 and the other is at 3:00. That's where the cam should be when you insert the disty.

I lined the yellow one up with the T on the scale last night when I was messing with the dizzy and putting it back in. And that's when the problem came with no power.

Ok I will try that tonight. Where should the rotor be pointed when this is done?

I already explained that about five posts ago. You really need to get a Haynes manual; you are asking a lot of very basic questions that are easily answered in there, either in print or picture. Most of us are just amateur, shade-tree mechanics, and the Haynes manual has about 80 - 90% of the info we need.

I have a Haynes manual and it doesn't state anywhere in there where the rotor should be. I've done everything just like the manual says to and somehow something still isn't right.

Page 2A-7, picture 7.10b, shows how the cam gear is supposed to line up.
Page 5-5. section 9, covers how to remove and install the distributor.

                  It's all there.

                  1. Line up the cam gear, with piston #1 at TDC.
                  2. With disty cap off, turn the rotor to point to the #1 plug wire; install disty. If you do that right, the only other thing would be if you had removed the disty cap and then put it on backwards.

In my book there are no shade tree mechanics u either know how to work on things or u r smart enough to look in the right places for help to figure out whats going on.nothing shade tree about it now if u r duck taping.baling wiring.and roping stuff together u r still no mechanic ur freakin a broke fool been there before but not with a festy.

Just today I was working on my car under the shade of a tree. And I am not a professional mechanic nor have gone to skool for such. Therefore I am a shade-tree mechanic: open book, read stuff, take things off and try to fix them, phone a friend/go on a forum....

I'm no mechanic either and this is my first ever motor rebuild and first car with a dizzy and timing to set.

The power is back but the timing still isn't right. I reinstalled the dizzy and everything was fine.

It's running fine but when I go to shift there's like a spudder in it and the ignition timing with the light will not line up.
