I took the air cleaner off, found the shaft that connects to the secondary shaft. I fired up the car, immediately shot up to about 2500-3000 rpm. I grabbed my needle nose and started twisting and wiggling that shaft, the rpms did drop a little, probably down to 1500-2000. Now the car was cold and I did not give it time to warm up, I did not know if it could be on normal fast idle because I just started it. Because it did drop some when messing with that shaft, do you think that it is probably the issue? I do not have any carb cleaner, I will have to pick some up on the way home from work in the morning, I drive truck all night. I am guessing tomorrow I should just start it, wiggle that shaft and spray the heck out of that little area on the drivers side where that shaft goes into side of carb? Thanks again for all the help guys, especially Festy46!

That green arrow is pointing to the shaft (rod) that sticks out of the secondary vacuum diaphram. You don't need to push or pull on that. Follow that little rod down to where it connects to a piece of linkage on the carb. That linkage is what you need to turn and not pull up and down on the rod sticking out of the diaphram. You should be able to see how that linkage would move if the rod were pulled up and down. That linkage should be connected to the end of a shaft that goes through the bottom of the carb from one side to the other. That is the secondary side of your carb and only moves under hard acceleration.

You need to let your engine warm up and the choke come off so you don't have the fast idle cam reving your motor above an idle. Once it is warmed up, you can then try turning the end of the secondary shaft.
It's been years since I looked at one of those carbs, but I think there is a little spring that may be connected to that secondary linkage to keep that side of the carb closed. I went with the Escort carb and never looked back.

Thanks, I'll give that a try tomorrow, it sounds like everyone has gone with the Escort carb, would that one for 59 dollars on Ebay that US carb sells be a good choice? I'll post something after I mess with it tomorrow and let you know how it goes, Thanks again,

Yes, that $59 carb will work. The guy has "make offer" on his listing. Offer him $50, maybe he will go for it. Either way, $59 is about as cheap as you will get a reman one. I got one for $20 once, but I was the only bidder and he started the bid at $20 and I got it. Just remember, as mentioned earlier, you will need an adapter or you will need to do some welding, drilling, and tapping to the intake manifold to make the Escort carb fit

Festy46....Thank You......Thank You......Thank You!!!!!!! It worked, I did just what you said with the secondary shaft, sprayed it and got it turning after the car warmed up and the fast idle kicked out. I took it for a nice long ride and it is running great. Thanks a million, I would have never figured that out without your help! Of course now when the car baffles me in the future, you know who I am going to come looking for! Take care, Bill
