Pulled my GL axles sunday. I am always apprehensive when I start to pull axles!
So far, it has been okay. I havent run into really stuck axles.Dan

I will see if I can get anyone to help get it out before I give up... these trannys are hard to find, and this one is in great shape. So if I pry while someone else yanks, spin and repeat I may have success? Brute force is clearly not the answer. The hardest part is getting the darn thing not to move while I pry, it isn't in the car. I am worried about having wrecked the bearings with all the hammering but its still better then the Aspys trans with the axle wiggling in the diff!

I honestly think the amount of force depends on that damn c clip, they are not precise tention springs, they are a bent peice of metal, bot even a very round metal. Its crazy how that little thing holds so well in its grove, i noticed ny axle jad two spots it grabbed, the seated location and when it was about 1/4 inch away from axle seal it grabbed again, i did both side as i was also pulling tranny, same situation for both is my expeience. I tried tap, pull, spin, pry, it , came down to PRY!!!!!!!Yellow 91 festiva GL 5speed

Well the clip wasn't in its groove then. The tapping at the start is to encourage it to center. From an engineering standpoint, it gets the job done, but removing it would have been easier if they tapered the inside of the splines on the diff. Nobody likes popped out cv shafts but nobody likes stuck 'serviceable' parts either.-Zack

I don't like prying on the case either, and I haven't since I started doing it this way: Remove steering knuckle in the usual way, but then put it back on, just sitting on the balljoint with the halfshaft thru the hole, and put the axle nut back on loosely. Now, if you grab the top of the steering knuckle where it bolts to the strut, you essentially have a slide hammer. Gently jerk it toward you and if the halfshaft doesn't pop out, turn up your force from gently up to firmly and so forth till it comes out.

I'm going to try bolting the transmission to a plank and parking my Freestar on it to hold the dang thing down. Then try all of these things again. So far the cv cup is cracked and bent from hammering trying to centre the c-clip, there is grease all over from the cv joint, and I think I might have wrecked the bearings inside. I don't recall any side to side play before I started, and now I can feel a little bit. Although that could just be from getting to know it through all the quality time we've spent together... lol.
