  • Car running away. Please help

I have a 1989 Festiva L (carburator) was running fine now when the fan kicks on (sitting still ) it runs nearly wide open. I know it revs up some when the fan kicks on but not wide open. First time i have ever had this problem and have owned 3 of them. Can someone give me some help. Thanks

the load compensation screw is adjusted too far. either that or the metered air bleed for the load comp is broken allowing an unmetered amount of air into the intake.

not doing yourself any favors by not knowing about your 24 year old car. load comp screw is located on the driver side of the carb, under the cable linkage. it's a philips head screw and if you have enough dexterity, you should be able to use your fingers to adjust it. it sits BELOW the choke step plate.

look at the picture: bottom right corner, just above the red wire, that's your idle load comp screw.

I think any sense of nastiness was thrown out the door when Arty went above and beyond to solve the problem? Maybe a little sarcasm in there but hey, we can't all be stiff?

Get rid of that feedback carb. Carbs do not have to be computer controlled. Recommend an Escort carb.

not being nasty, just stating a fact seeing that you stated that this is the 3rd carbed festy that you've owned. you're first order of buisness should be to procure a Factory Service Manual for referance (NOT a haynes manual as they are rather useless for the carb cars). Second would be to look up one of the more local members for more assistance, or at lease clarification so that the rest of the forum can jump in and address the issue en-mass.

Hello Festyboy. I see you are already a member of the 10000 club. While I am soon to become a member of the 5000 club. Don't worry, I have no ambitions on ever catching up to you. I would add that, we both share a membership in the twin carb club.

This is what granny needs + an adapter.

possibly, but a simpler solution may give the desired results, it may just be an adjustment issue.

Can an Adapter be purchased also?

That carb is one of 2 needed for the twin carb intake off a laser in Australia. Everything to mount it needs to be custom.

I had that problem it was the timing in my case after timing was adjusted it quit my 88 also reved up when you turned the headlight on or heater switch and would idle down when turned off weird !

chuck55: My carburetted 89 does that. Turning on headlights at idle increased engine speed. Somewhere in the Haynes manual it says that's to increase alternator speed to increase electrical power for increased elecrical load.
