  • Festy flywheel

Okay, I am doing the "poor mans flywheel resurface" LOL
I've done this before with good success on flywheels that werent too badly glazed/burnt. Did the FW on the b6 swap, but this one on the GL is a little worse. Kinda boreline on the poor mans resurface!

Heres pics of the job I did with a 1 inch square x 6 inch long Latrobe tool steel lathe bit wrapped in 100 grit quality sandpaper.

But then ...I noticed these "heat cracks" on the surface of the FW

I am still considering using as is, but I may take it to a shop for a resurface anyway. Its just starting to cost a lot to get this GL running!
Needs new clutch, axles, seals, belts ...and whatever else pops up. It is painted, all new seals are installed, pulleys on, new alt, (that was new in box in back of the GL) and now I wait for clutch and axles. They were shot too.

    Whatcha think about the flywheel?

The cracks are not anywhere else on the FW, just these 6 small cracks in pic.

did it work ok before? I think those cracks wont hurt anything even heads get heat cracks inbetween valves especially diesels and most of those are fine.
I've used the scotch brite wheels on a drill just run around the flywheel on about 5 clutch swaps before and never had a problem. imo only thing resurface does is fix a warped flywheel.

Yeah, on the 630 mile drive back from Texas with it, it did okay, and that was with the flywheel kinda burnt looking, and a glazed looking disc.
The surface in the pics cleaned up pretty good, considering it was dark brownish/blueish all over. I didnt spend that much time on it.
I am getting a new clutch kit. Looking at a Rhinopac clutch kit on rockauto.com for $74
Is Rhinopac anygood? On RA.com they are a favorite, if that means anything... (rolls eyes)

Rhinopac is one of the few that has 4 springs in the clutch disc, most have 3 springs
