Is it not called a fan belt? I guess its the alternator belt? I have no fricking idea. I just know what ever it is its very warn.

Back in the 60's, 70's and into the 80's they were also called a "fan belt". That belt drove the water pump which also had the cooling fan mounted to the front and the generator/alternator. Most of the young'uns on here probably don't know this.Jerry

Matthew, check for wear in the alternator belt. Tightening it is obviously the first thing to do, but depending on how used it is, it may be time for a replacement.In love with a MadScientist!:thumbright:

It is possible that if your squealing does not go away after the first minute or two, that your alternator has bad bearings causing the belt to slip, but really, for less than 10 bucks, throw a new belt on there and tighten to spec and see what happens. If it is constantly slipping you are going to smell burnt rubber eventually.Oldest Festiva on the forum (so far) 3/87 LX - 225k
