  • '88/'89 Camshaft removal help!

    Hey guys,

I've got the valve cover, rocker arms, thrust plate, distributor and fuel pump off, but I can't seem to get the camshaft to move to the right to slide it out.

It will rotate somewhat freely, but it binds when i try to tap it out.

I have a feeling that the 'valleys' in the middle of the cam's bearing surfaces (like the one where the thrust plate rides) may have worn matching lands into the head's bearing surfaces - and that is what I'm hitting up against. Sound plausible?

How do I get the old cam out? Hit it harder?

    Thanks!

    Resolved!

Yes, the answer was to tap it a little harder.

    Came right out.

    Cheers

Well, I was wrong all along... I thought that I had overtightened the cam gear bolt and caused the end of the camshaft to crack around the bolt hole. In fact what has happened is that the left-most camshaft bearing appears to have frozen up, tearing the cam gear locating pin out of it's hole and causing the crack.

Might be better off finding another head and cam. A 90 or higher will have HLA's, and the cam will have a lobe for your mechanical fuel pump. an Aspire head won't.
