So I'm tackling my overheating problem. I found out about a little thing called a thermostat. So I replaced mine.

It had a nice seal of melted rubber

I managed to take a look inside

Is that bad?

I got the new thermostat in and went ahead and pulled the radiator and hoses out and cleaned them out with water.
Put everything back in and took a test drive to see if i could see a difference, which I did.

I came back home and added some more water. Now I'm hearing a hissing sound, I can't seem to find the source of it on any of the hoses.

Have any experience with this? Did I mess up? And also is there anything I can do about the rust inside the second picture?

I trust you didn't crack the thermostat housing like so many other members have. The thermostat has a tendency to slip out of the groove if you don't hold the housing tight until both bolts are snugged up.

Hmmm I didn't think about that.
I put the two bolts in to place and then let it kind of hang while I tightened up back and forth.

A cracked t stat housing could cause a hiss. You should see steam or water/antifreeze come out from around the housing area if it's cracked.

Ok so the good news is that I didn't crack my housing. Got a new seal and put it on very carefully making sure not to crank on it. I don't hear a hissing sound anymore.

The bad news is that my car is not staring back to the first problem .

It's turns over and it makes a pattern of 1, 2, 3 sounds like it's going to start but it doesn't just that pattern over and over again.

Spark plug? Distributor cap? How do I tell?

Yes I do,
I've tried spraying starter fluid but to no response.

What size socket is the spark plug?

Got new spark plugs and distributor cap, she's up again
