No I do not believe there was a gasket between the backing plate and spindle.
How did the spindle clean up?
Did you get the hardware and self-adjusters too?

This diagram, compliments of F3BZ, doesn't show a gasket between the spindle and backing plate, so I think your good in that regard.

Ok so this morning after driving wheel started to wobble and bearing was destroyed any suggestions as to what it could be?

Just some obvious stuff.

It was the correct bearings and you torqued it correctly and staked it off so it wouldn't back off.

The bearing needs to be torqued to a specific level to put them in the proper position on the bearing.
As far as staking them you you have the castellated cover/nut/keyed/washer assembly which is what you should have used once you have the correct torque spec on the spindle dialed in.

I don't have a manual with me, anyone recall the rear bearing torque spec, I want to say 18-22 ft-lbs.
But could be wrong.

Vineland, tell what you did when you reassembled this.

Haynes manual says:
1. tighten to 12 ft-lbs.
2. spin while tightening further to 18-22 ft-lbs to seat bearings and
remove grease or burrs.
3. back off 1/4 turn, then finger tighten until slight resistance (3-7 lbs)
4. check that spins freely with no looseness or play. adjust by hand if needed.

When I did mine, never having done wheel bearings before, I pulled over the first couple of times I was out driving and felt the rear hubs to make sure they were not heating up and pulled on teh wheel to make sure it was tight. After doing this 2-3 times I decided everything was okay. No problems since. You could also jack up the car after a few days and tug on the wheel to see if there is any play. I probably did that but can't remember.

The full assembly, no missing pieces, is required.
there are very few extraneous pieces on a festiva.

Now you are going to need a new set of bearing, an expense that could have been avoided.
I assume you have not replaced a set of bearing?
We might want to create a new thread to do that!
