I have never really owned or worked on a manual transmission until my Festiva. Well, the shifter has always been loose. You can wiggle it around in gear. Now it has developed a new problem. It's not lining up to shift into the gears. It takes some forcing to get it to line up. Has anyone had this problem? Or at least know how to fix it?

If you want nice crisp shifts, have lots of money to burn and don't like crawling under the car often, then I recommend bronzoil. I would also recommend inspecting the nylon seats on the shifter pivot ball for cracks.Last edited by bravekozak; 07-27-2014, 11:51 AM.

I replaced the rear shifter bushing with one made out of 1/2" copper pipe. Cut 1.25" length of pipe and cut 3/8" wedge out of piece lengthwise, then close the wedge. There are 8 photos at www.photobucket.com under userid ag384fb. I did it because I was having trouble getting teh car to shift into 1st and 2nd gears. The shifter was too loose to throw the lever over far enough to get into those gears without catching.Original owner of silver grey carburetted 1989 Festiva. 105k km as of June 2006. 140k km as of June 2021.
