Worn piston rings.

Blue needs new piston rings. It's eating oil like 2 quarts a week. I took a chance on this engine I got from a junk yard that Matt supplied for me and put in.
How hard is it to replace/put in new piston rings? I know it would be easier, but does the engine have to be removed?

No, but it would make life a lot easier.
If your going to do the rings, better to replace all the other seals and bearings while you're in there.
Might even call for some machine shop work.
Do it right the first time.
You'll have a "new" engine and know it's good for anoth 250,000+ if you use good quality parts.
Cheaper in the long run than swaping in unknown engines.
Just my $0.03 worth (inflation adjusted).

You can ...I have done an in frame rebuild , it's not much harder really . I have had good luck with just slap rings on and go ,( no honing) I'm sure others won't like hearing that but oh well .. Gets another 100thou out of it .

Seals and bearings were already replaced when the engine was put in. The only thing we didn't do (which we should have) is replaced the rings.

Did you do the valve stem seals? Have you verified it is the rings? You may want to do a compression test! Doing new rings, you might as well rebuild her from the ground up. Easiest would be to grab a blown B3, maybe at madness, and rebuild that, then swap it in.

You did the crankshaft bearings?

Muleskinner, are you sure it's rings and not valves? How many miles showing on the odometer in the car with the JY motor? Valves would be much easier to do, and in either case you would be pulling the head.

Valve seals & front seals and gaskets were all done on the engine this spring. I'm hoping it's just stuck piston rings.
