  • Idle issue

Hey guys, I have an idle issue with the 92 GL I have recently gotten running. It has a high idle on start up, and idle comes down slightly, but stays kinda high after.
On start idle is around 2000prm, and comes down to 1400 rpm. After it drops to 1400, if revved and then let it settle, it will again stay at 2000 for a bit and then slowly drop to about 1400 again..

I have talked to member William about this, and he thinks the IAC may be sticking. He said he tried to clean his, and free it up, but wound up disconnecting it.

Is there a good way to fix the IAC? or check it?

I also tried finding one on Rockauto, and couldn't find one. They did list an IAC connector, but not the IAC, itself. Part stores not listing one either. Maybe they are calling the IAC something else? Haynes doesn't mention IAC either.

    Idle issue

Check the idle air screw on the throttle body and tps sensor may be moved in it's slot on the throttle body. Check for air leaks sometimes high idle is vacuum leak if nothing's been messed with.
I've seen people screw it all the way in thinking it will do something when there fuel pump dies.

      ^^^ :highly_amused:

Thanks. I will check those! I shouldn't have a vacuum leak, most hoses were replaced, when I dropped the Aspire motor in it, a couple weeks ago, but I will spray it and see if the 1 or 2 old vacuum lines are leaking while I check tps and air screw

For the IAC, you can restrict the air flow until the idle comes down.

it sounds like a AIC issue but if it acts anything like what my aspire engine was it was a TPS problem

How do you mean .... Restrict the air flow?

I didnt have brake fluid handy, to check for vac leaks, so I used propane! I somehow managed to NOT set it on fire. LOL

            No vac leaks!

You could pinch off one of the iac hoses or unplug the iac to see if idle drops .

I know my engine didn't want to run at all after I unplugged the IAC plug. So pinching a line may work.

I know I still have idle problems, at cold start idle it shoots up to 2k rpms, then when the engine warms up it drops to 1k, which is like only 100-200 RPMS higher than it is supposed to be. But I have tried the TPS, CTS, IAC, VAF, O2 sensors and nothing seems to fix it. Also I have checked for vacuum leaks too. Also timing belt was on there perfectly too. So I basically have said screw it, it is not a big problem anyway, I still easily get 40MPG highway on 13" wheels. Heck I recalculated my mileage from my Chicago road trip, and driving to the city, in the city, then back out of the city a few towns away all on a single tank, and with the a/c on, I achieved 41.5MPGs on a B6. I still don't see why these engines were not at least available in GLs or LXs, extra power with little to no fuel mileage loss.

Also make sure your timing belt didn't jump a tooth, the idle will shoot up if that happens.

Torque when you unplug your iac you have to turn the idle up slightly.
That's how I have mine, idles perfect once warmed up. Cold idle is low and ruff so I warm it with the Gas pedal.
I need a new iac but there more then my cars worth for a new one ,and there hard to find in the jy for the b6d.

It's all in the history my son.
At the time these cars were made, it was all about meeting the Federal CAFE standard.
These were imported to the U.S. by Ford for the sole purpose of improving the Ford's Cafe fleet average MPG.
To offset the crappy MPG the trucks and vans they were selling and making a good profit on.
If they thought the public would have bought the 1.1L engine in sufficient numbers they'd have brought that in instead.
By the EPA testing standards in place at the time, the 1.6 would have returned less MPG per unit sold.
So that even if it cost less to put a 1.6 L in, they would have opted for the 1.3 for its better MPG number per EPA.
It has nothing to do with providing optimum performance of this vehicle.
Be thankful we can so easily improve the performance of it ourselves.
