Question for manual transmissions: when the fluid gets low, do you hear a subtle noise when shifting, almost like a momentary 'woosh' of air being released under pressure or the whir of an electric motor? (Sorry, best description I can think of. Maybe I should post a video clip.) My 88L 4-spd started doing this recently. More noticeable when the engine is cold. Starting to wonder if my transmission fluid is low.

Don't think so. My right front boot is ripped, though. Why did Mazda design a car without the capability of checking transmission fluid via a dipstick?
