  • Can the timing belt tensioner's bearing be replaced?

88LX with 190K, engine professionally rebuilt at 113K thirteen years ago.

I'm getting a squeak/ticking sound that's proportional to RPM. It's been there for quite some time to a certain extent, and always thought it was just the timing belt not tracking perfectly straight and contacting the belt cover. But suddenly it's getting louder.

If it's the timing belt tensioner, can the tensioner's bearing be replaced?

Napa here in WA wants to sell me a new tensioner for $45 plus shipping from NC, the only place their computer says they have one.

If you have the time to wait, try rockauto.com. I order my parts from there and look for a discount code on here or on the web. It will save you 5%, that's what I saved with my latest order.

      Rockauto.com lists:
      "Auto 7" brand for $8.42
      Gates brand for $36.99
      ACDelco brand for $51.79

This is for a new belt tensioner (not just a bearing).

Who/what is "Auto 7"? Can that be a decent part for that price?

        What do you think?
Safest is to buy name-brand stuff. I'd only buy a suspiciously cheap part in an emergency when no other was available/I didn't have the funds.

When I rolled over the "Info" button for the "Auto 7" offer, here's what it said:

"Auto 7 is America’s leading supplier of Original Equipment Quality parts for Hyundai, Kia, and Daewoo. They enjoy a rich history in the OEM parts market as part of an international auto parts company in business since 1953. This history enables Auto 7 to offer reliable, convenient and affordable OEM replacement parts to best service your vehicle.

"Quality •Manufactured in Korea by Original Equipment Tier 1 & Tier 2 suppliers
•ISO-14000, QS-9000, or ISO/TS-16949 certified meeting worldwide quality standards"

When I zoomed in on the associated part photo, it had Kia's logo on it.

So I ordered one. If it's what Kia made (or had its supplier make) originally, how wrong can I go for eight dollars (vs. 40 to 60 or more) plus another eight dollars for shipping?

They only had one "Auto 7" part left. If they'd had more, I might have purchased a lifetime supply! They day will come when we have to start parking Festies, even rust-free ones like we have in the West, in the weeds for lack of parts.
