  • Oil Starvation, Engine Quit and Locked Up: Repairable?

Do you think I should spend the time trying to repair a 1991 Festiva motor where the engine had a massive oil leak and then locked up? Have you ever brought one back to life where that happened?

My first thought would be to simply start taking the head off, remove the plugs and put a little oil on the pistons, try to get it rotating, remove the pistons, check out the rod bearings, rings, and valves, check out the surface of the crank shaft where the rod bearings go, check out the cylinder walls, and then diagnose and go from there. What are your thoughts?

Pistons will move. It's the crank. All my oil starved engines, the most miserable was the rod and mains. They fuse and melt themselves together, resulting in rods that won't pivot, so crank won't turn, so you can't get at cap bolts. Unless a miracle and it's set just right.

So at the least, you're looking at a dip and bore, if it'll clean up before going too far... , and crank to be turned/replaced. New aluminum to match new bore, new rings. New undersized bearings for fresh journal grinds....

Those are a minimum for sure. The cheap head design, hardened cam lobes ride on aluminum bore of head directly. That might be junk, so new head. Add a 80% chance to that.

Valves run nearly dry to begin with.

Besides that, just nuts and bolts! Good luck!

I was pointing out what probably happened. I'll agree it might not be logical. Especially on a peewee 1.3
