so i went out to start the car up today and it fired right up ran for 15 seconds then died and wouldnt restart. it is getting good spark and its getting fuel(possibly too much fuel). if i unplug the fuel pump it will start and run for a few seconds and then die. it spits and sputters the whole time that its running. then after it stops firing with the fuel pump disconnected i reconnect it and it wont fire at all. then after i crank it a few times if i disconnect the fuel pump it fires up and runs a few seconds and dies... any ideas? 89 fi automatic. when it started the first time it sounded like it bogged down and then slowly lost rpm and died. ive driven about 100 miles on this tank so i dont think that fuel quality is the issue. it almost acts like its flooding. it cranked slower after it died. but even with jumper cables it wouldnt start.

By the way you describe this, it sounds like the fuel delivery volume is low. I would check fuel pressure at key on, after it's been bled down, and watch the rate of pressure buildup to max pressure. Check for the proper pressure being maintained during cranking while the engine is not starting. Of course you could have gotten a boatload of trash at the last fillup. When I'm good I'm very, very good and when I'm bad I'm HORRID.

ill play with it some today and see whats going on. i wasnt happy when i went to start it up last night after work at 2:30 and it wouldn't run.lol so if it doesnt magically fix itself when i go back to look at it today ill have to get a tow. i would rather work on it in my garage than outside since its 8 degrees here and tonight its supposed to be -8

I have to say, when I saw your location is Ohio, I was wondering if your problem was because of the temperature, as maybe the compression is too low to handle it. Maybe an even partially warmed garage could get it going. We will be at 27 or lower here with wind at 30-35. Makes me want to head south. When I'm good I'm very, very good and when I'm bad I'm HORRID.

I might have the same problem tomorrow when I have to get to work, hope not though as I don't have a back-up solution. Also my ignition switch plays up big time at these temperatures too and have had it not even attempt to crank, and dash lights flash rapidly and relays start clicking like mad.1991 Ford Festiva BP (Full Aspire/Rio Swap) (337k Miles) (Around 95k Engine)
