  • Swapping 1988 Festiva Carb engine for 95 EFI Aspire engine- questions!!

    Hello all!

I found a 95' Aspire with an EFI engine in a junk yard. I want to rebuild the engine and install it in my vehicle using the 88 carb setup (I'm planning on buying a weber carb to install at a later date). My question is, can I use just the engine from the Aspire and put the carb on it, or is there barriers to doing this? Thank you all for any advice given.

You will need a external fuel pump plus a regulator to put a carb in an EFI engine. Also you will need an intake manifold for the carb or build a custom one and place double webers. There are some VW watercooled kits that may be adaptable.
Why don't just swap the whole deal with the wiring and keeping the EFI? Get the fuel tank also if you decide to keep the EFI.
Another idea could be finding a B6 and turn it to Carb; even a B8 with double carbs sound fun...
At the end, all depends on your budget, time and for what you want the car for; if it is for fun or daily driver....

Like Fordverde said, you can't run the manual fuel pump on the aspire head unless you swap cams and lifters/rockers. The carb cam has another lobe for the pump, but it's solid lifter and doesn't play well with the hydraulic lash adjusters in the aspire head. Your carb manifold will fit on the aspire head and everything else should swap over too.

If you do want to do a carb conversion, the easiest intake would be an 88-89 B3 carb intake, but it is a piece of crap. BAD design!!!!!!

B3 carb intake has the air/fuel mix coming out the rear of the intake, and has to make 2 90 degree turns to reach the engine!!! This is not good at all for a wet flow manifold.

Fuel does not like bends, and bends cause the fuel to fall out of the mix and even can puddle in the manifold.

Best bet would be to find a B6 carb intake from Canada. They were only available in Canada. Good luck trying to find one! Rare as heck!
The B6 intake has the mix coming out the sides and straight to the engine. MOAR power! Better mix!

Thank you guys! I really like the idea of having the carb setup. I've had my Festiva for a while now, and it had taken great care of me. I wanted to treat it to a rebuilt engine and transmission. It is a carby, and I like it that way! I also like the b3 engine. I had the B6 in the four Mercury Capris I own, and I'll tell you, I just didn't care for the engine... I was constantly having to do something to them. The engine in my Festy has been bulletproof. Bought the car 4 years ago for 300, did nothing to it, and save for bearings and brakes, have not replaced anything in it.

So, what I need to do is look for another 88-89 Festiva?

Hmmm .. that's strange that you had problems with a B6. Was it a single cam? A single cam B6 is a B3! Just a bigger bore.

I have a weber topped B6 and I love it. Gives me no problems. Starts and drives great.

Then, why don't you just rebuild your current engine and keep it all stock? That way you know that everything will be good for another 100k miles or more.

I'll be honest... It's because I know it'll be off the road for a while if I do that. I was thinking if I could find a spare motor I could rebuild it while I drive the car, and when it was done, I could drop the rebuilt engine in.

It's crazy to be honest. I've heard all these great things about the Capris and the B6 engines, but out of the four I had, the only one that was marginally ok was the B6T. I will say I don't blame the engines completely... Most had 150-200k on them, so they were worn a bit...

Just swap your intake onto the aspire motor and run an electric inline pump 3-5 psi you will also have to keep your distributor. I would wire in a relay for the fuel pump and use the hot lead on the coil to close the relay.Pretty much what you already have just a different pump and. A relay I can tell you how to wire the pump and relay if you don't know.I really need your help as well.

Put your manifold, carb and distributor on to the aspire motor and wire in a low pressure inline electric fuel pump and your done.
