Never owned an automatic but understand you can buy and install a generic rad to cool the fluid. Used to cost about $35. How much oil would pay for that?

Oh shoot, I was talking about engine oil at high power , high RPM. In the manual 4 speed car. The 5 speed is not as bad, it has the power to pull at lower rpm. The automatic used to smoke until we cleaned the rings. It still uses a small amount of oil but it does not tow trailers either lol.

OK so if I had a festy with 278k runs great and I drive 100 miles a day 5 days a week with a 4 speed at 70- 75 mph should I be overly concerned about the engine blowing up

You can reassure yourself by checking the vacuum, compression, and timing as time and money permit. Vacuum check is cheapest and described in a thread at the top of this forum. If they look good then keep it clean and lubricated and change filtres as recommended. Usual stuff. Others might have different advice.

Honestly, these engines will run forever even at 4000 rpm, do have to keep the fluids in them. older engines use about a quart an hour on the racetrack, and a fresh engine will run two race days back to back and only use 1/4 quart.
When I tow a Miata to the track at Inde and back, apx 200mi., the oil consumption is unchanged. towing speed 55-60mph.

You can certainly pull it apart. That will allow you to decide what to buy. In what way is it broken though, that is going to affect how you get parts, and what you can get? If it is gears it is toast, the cost of replacement gears will be too high. If it is bearings or synchros you have a chance to get those. Though where from is hard to say. It is a Mazda tranny, but sold by Ford, and Ford does not carry much for the car anymore.
