Glass install...WINDSHIELD

Okay...those who saw the previous thread I had on the engine in my Festiva giving me fits...appears ALL of the pistons are now ring-less. Oh well.
Was thinking about selling the car, along with EVERYTHING Festiva that I have...and moving on...but only one person was really interested...but he has decided he has too much on his plate now...so I'm keeping it...will do the motor later this summer.

So...moving forward, the only thing left to get out of the one Festiva I was parting out was the new windshield, and I needed one in the now motor-less white car. Got the good one out without breaking it...and the white one out...with...well...some more damage...but who cares right?

QUESTION: When putting the new windshield back in...I think all I needed was a good solid and rather thick coat of silicone. My buddy thinks we are also in need of a rubber gasket or seal. Who is correct?
Also...I bought tubes of JB Weld RTV black silicone, (1) and Permatex Block Silicone. (2). Are these what I need? (the store only had the one of JB and the two of Permatex. I assume it won't make any difference having the two different brands.) Is three tubes enough?

Anyone who has EVER put a windshield in...feel free to offer the advice. Thanks!

So...I see that you are a BIG fan of the tape. Next question...where can I easiest find it? Does it go on the class first? Or on the car first? (I've never used the tape...so I am truly ignorant here. Or...you could hop a plane and come do it for me! LOL!!! I'll BBQ a streak and sautee some mushrooms for you with a baked potato on the side! )

Thanks for the help...so far. I take it from your post that the tape is pretty much a super-bond...and it sounds like it is easier to use...if I can find it. This town I live in is small...and far removed from a big one...so I am not sure if I can get the tape locally or have to send away for it.

Okay...curious...and didn't see where the info was available on the page...will one tube be enough for one windshield install on a Festiva? Or does it take a bit more than one? I have a respirator from my painting...so that isn't a problem.

My brother and I did his aspire with one tube. You want a nice fat bead so you have little squish when you place the glass. You kind of have to judge as you go. We had never done it before. I watched a few vids on u tube. It turned out great and saved a few bucks.

Okay. I read brave's postings too...and the part about the fumes has merit...but I do have a nice respirator...and I am a big one for factory original on stuff like glass. I am sort of leaning that way. Gonna have to give it some thought over the next couple of days. Sunday is set aside for installing the rear end and leaf springs in my son's '68 Mustang. What can go wrong there...right? OOPs!

I removed my broken windshield. Removed all traces of previous sealant and rust with a wire wheel mounted on a angle grinder, primed and painted the surface again, sped up the drying process with a heat gun, applied tape to the frame, cleaned the new glass where it would make contact with the backing tape, called my son to help me position the glass, peeled off the tape, positioned the glass and then pushed on it, reinstalled the trim. It is ready for when the next time it is broken again.

butyl rubber + sticky resins mashed together in a large Z blade (sigma) mixer

windshield tape

The same stuff that holds the vapor barriers on the doors, except a lot bigger.

You can cut through it with a windshield knife tool without breaking the glass.
It is almost impossible not to break the glass with urethane. I feel sorry for those human guinea pigs at auto glass huts, breathing urethane fumes all day long. Isocyanates are odorless, so you can't smell the danger.
