  • Festiva chokes then goes while driving!

    Hey guys,

I got my girlfriend's Festiva to pass emissions finally. I am still having a drivability problem though. For example: I'm driving down the road doing say 35mph and have my foot steady on the gas pedal. Suddenly it feels like I have totally taken my foot off the pedal and I start to slow down(my foot is still in the same spot) and then, after a few seconds it starts going again. Im stumped. I've installed a new catalytic converter, fuel pressure regulator, coil, cap, rotor, and plug wires. These are all BRAND new items on the Festiva Motorsport engine that I just installed. So.. pretty much everything is new in the engine bay hehehe. It also has a brand new fuel pump, fuel filter, gas tank, and professionally service injectors. I've switched out the air meter, had the ignition control module tested, and checked my vacuum connections. In addition to this problem, does anyone know what is bolted to the lower intake on the right hand side, with the vacuum connections going to the intake and it also runs coolant through it as well?

      Hey Packrat,

It's not quite the same problem. It doesn't rev up and down at all. That was a good video though  Mine will cut out sometimes too when I am just sitting there and give it some gas. If I give it too much gas it almost wants to shut off. So I keep tapping the pedal up and down, and it wants to cut out when I try to get it to accelerate. I turn off the car, turn it back on, and I'm good to go. I forgot to add that I have a new o2 sensor as well.

The reving up and down was something that had just occured when the other problems were coming to a head , If you read all the post I made , It started out just like your , I said ,it feels like I shut the key off at a steady speed , and then it just come's right back on like I turned it back on , It had been doing it off and on for awhile , then it got real bad in the last week , then the erratic idle started at 1,500 to 2,000 rpm's under no load ,. like you said yours cuts out
I cleaned the TPS contacts and lubed it and it made no difference .
I just happen to stumble onto this when I had the idle cranked up and was playing with the internals of the TPS, once I adjusted it all my problems went away ??
TPS send a signal to the ECM and regulates the amount of fuel to the injectors .
I was going to replace mine , but decided to try to adjust it .
I know what you mean ,I have been fighting this problem on mine for over a year ,it would come and go. I knew it would eventually come to a head .

Mine started out just like your's is doing .

I may be wrong , but I would almost lay money that is is your TPS , either faulty or just a slight adjustment

Hmmm. Well, I hope that is what it is. I will give that a try. The TPS sensor is one of the few things that I haven't replaced heheheh. I have to get this squared away before next Wednesday. I am going to drive the Festiva to Wisconsin from Atlanta. I have my 10 year reunion over in Minnesota on the 30th but my mom lives near Hayward, so I am going to see her. I haven't adjusted a TPS sensor yet. I guess I need to look at the Haynes manual for the SOP. Thanks again for the replies packrat:-) You've helped me out a couple times now. Hopefully the TPS is what it is. I was having the same exact problem with my 92 5spd after I installed the B6 from the 92 323. I still haven't squared mine away because I have been focusing on installing the FMS engine and getting my girlfriend's up and running. The thing that stumps me is, mine was running fine for 3hours on my way to San Antonio last month, and then it started doing the same thing. ?????

OKAY..put a brand new TPS sensor on today, and it did not resolve the issue. I'm getting a small ticking sound from the sensor that is bolted into the driver side of the lower intake. The sensor has coolant and vacuum lines going to it. It has a large vacuum line that plugs into the side of the upper intake, and it also has another large vacuum line that plugs into the plastic air intake tube that is connected to the throttle body. There is a hose that runs from the coolant tube to the bottom of the throttle body, and another hose that runs from the bottom of the throttle body to the sensor. Does ANYONE know what this is? I looked through the Haynes manual and CANNOT find it at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am leaving for Wisconsin/Minnesota one week from today, and my girlfriend doesn't feel comfortable driving the Festiva right now, but I really want to take it.

            Thanks Joe

Thanks Packrat. I found it doing a google search earlier  There was a Kia pride thread that had a picture of it, so I posted in another thread. Thanks

P.S. In the haynes manual they call it a Idle speed control-bypass air (ISC-BPA) for anyone else that was looking for it

                  Festiva Chokes Then Goes

Have you changed the PCV valve. Check to see if you have oil in the intake.

The IAC isn't new, just because I couldn't find one heheheh. I did get 2 more from the salvage yards though, and they weren't the problem. I did find a broken wire the temperature sensor on the back of the engine. I fixed that, but I haven't had time to drive it to see if the issue was resolved. Hopefully that was the issue
