take the bolt to the local hardware store. They normally have a bolt thread checker on the shelf. Check the thread buy a bolt thats the same. I would try to get grade 8.

I have been to O'Reilly, Napa - no longer carries grade 8, and Home Depot. Bolt end was exposed and very corroded. We tried their checkers and non fit right. I am guessing it's an M10-1 x 60 mm.

Assume the old bolt was clean going into the store checker? I'd clean the threads with a wire brush. I restore a lot of rusty old bicycles and it really helps to clean the threads.
For hard bolts look for three raised dashes on the head.

Unfortunately, I am unable to locate my Festiva Manual. I believe there was a bolt description and size legend within that book. Can someone who has easy access to their manual please check this reference for S/M 10.T I Googled to no avail.

I have a bag of them at home, I can get the dimensions when I am done with work. Need to work in the shop tonight anyway, so I should remember to get the size.

                  Bolt Size: M10-1.25 X 70mm Class 10.9

Advance Auto Part # 99102070 comes with a nut too

                  Thanks TominMO!

I searched rear shock bolt, but did come across that thread - reason being, listed as rear strut when actually it is a shock.

I noticed the price of that bolt was 1.29 5 years ago and is now 1.79.
I don't know about you but my social security and retirement benefits sure haven't gone up 39% since then and I suspect most people haven't had that big of a raise at their work either...
but then hedge billionaire Jeff Smith needed a raise so he can take over Yahoo and add it to his Starboard Value LP hedge fund portfolio. hmm.. maybe the Advance Auto Parts employees go a big raise.

Thanks for this info.. I needed one of these to replace the one I drilled through getting my right strut off Rosie.

I'm used to thinking of shocks as totally separate from springs, like the old days before we had FWD and struts. To me, a strut is when the spring is on top of the shock. In front they are called MacPherson struts, but in the rear it is called a Chapman strut, but only if the rear wheels are driven. But some people use the word shock for any type of strut or shock. Rock Auto lists some of the rear struts as "shock absorber", but that's erroneous I think. Mostly they lump the FWD fronts and rears together in their listings as struts. It probably confuses things that coilovers are thought of as shocks, whether on front or rear.

Long story short--use both terms when searching! :-)

I use 10mm-1.5x70 8.8Z I have a bag of nuts to match because i normally cant reuse the factory nuts anyway. The biggest thing is making sure it is 10mm and 70mm long and use a matching nut.

Thanks to all and I wish everyone the best! We need to stay united and preserve the love of these precious Festivas.

The major difference between shocks and struts is that a strut is a structural part of the vehicles suspension system where a shock is not.

FYI - I used lots of PB Blaster, wire brushing, and wound up cutting the shock off as listed in a previous thread.

Actually, $1.89 each with 9.75% tax. I just picked up two for a grand total $4.15. This is why I drive a Festiva. I can't afford to drive anything else while the 1% can do as they please.

So what was said earlier was its a m10x1.25 bolt and you use an m10x1.5 and grind off the captive nut and use your own nut?
