I was under the impression that junkyards were required to drain all AC systems for that reason. I was with my dad a long time ago getting a new AC part for his car and he just let them know it was still there and they went and drained it for him.

Had to deal w/ 2 pressurised systems at 2 different junkyards.

At the time I was dealing with them I had no idea the stuff in there harmed the enviroment, or else I would've collared someone and forced them to remove the R-12.

While allowing R12 to escape into the atmaosphere is illegal, there are more than a few people, myself included, who do not feel it harms the atmosphere.

I feel that it was a half-baked theory that was embraced by a manufacturer who's patens had long since run out and had a replacement waiting to take it's place, but with no real competitive edge.

Scientist; "I think that R12 is making a hole in the Ozone."
Dupont: "You are absolutely correct, and we have just the thing to replace it!"
