  • Morning start up issue

90 auto festiva stalls every morning 2 or three times and will drive sluggish for first couple of minutes and then after it warms up it idles fine and doesn't stall. I have replaced coolant temp sensor and unplugged the iac while running and idle changes as I connect and disconnect so that appears to be working fine. Only after the car sits for a couple hours is when I have the issue. Fuel pump and gas tank were replaced by previous owner not sure about filter. Other than that issue car drives fine once warm

First thing I'm thinking of is the IAC (idle air control) may be bad.

Iac appears to be working fine significant idle change while unplugging and plugging back in. I removed the intake to discover a significant amount of oil gatherd in the accordian section. I am thinking that is affecting the maf sensor causing the issue but I'm not sure I'm kind of stumped I removed the iac and cleaned it out today so I guess I'll see what happens tommorow morning

Have you checked engine compression? Excessive blow-by caused by ring wear can cause low compression, rough idle and oil in your intake tube. You don't a MAF sensor as more modern cars have. A Festiva uses a vane air flow meter that measures air by the opening and closing of the vane.

Do you know whether it's the valves in #4 or the rings? If you're mechanically inclined, you can save $$ by pulling the head yourself and taking it to a shop to have the valves done, if that is the issue.

If rings, then your only option is to install a turboed BP......

carbon buildup on valve will cause leak and might be cured with chemical cleaning. worked for me. I could see carbon on the underside of the valve cover indicating leaking exhaust valve. used a chemical cleaner before changing oil. cheap cure.

Yep - if it's rings - the only fix is a turboed BP .

Why not rering? I did mine last spring and it helped with my compression. My cylinders are pretty scored and messed up but should get a few more years outta her.

Looking like rings .... I put some oil down the cylinder and re checked that cylinder and compression immediately went up .... Car has 48,000 on it

Pull the head, the pan and pull the cylinders. Due to the age and mileage, they're likely just stuck. That's all I had to do with Skippy, aside from a burnt valve, but that was a different issue.

Sounds like it may have sat for a long time if the mileage is truly that low on that motor; although I'm not sure how that would cause this problem either. Otherwise no way would the compression and oil-control rings be worn out. Maybe broken rings?
