I've used the new cv in tge old cup before with good results just make sure the cups not worn I've put the new one in a worn out cup and got axel shake at random.
I've had good luck with this as well
A 3/8 all thread screws right into a vice grips and then a peace of pipe and washers and nuts for the stop for a home made slide hammer . But this can scar the cup if not careful
There's also a tool designed for the escort that goes around the diff pin and you hammer it out from the other side. I've never used one but lookes like a great idea.

Guy i know put the trans on an engine stand. Chained the stand to something. Wrapped a chain around the axle stub that was left andthe other end to a sledgehammer. Took an hour and it came out. I had prevously cut slots in it and both of us with prybars and hammers couldnt get it off

Hmm! thanks for the tips. Kinda weary of scarring it yet in case i need to use it. Curious about the chain trick but i wasn't able to get a small chain around the cup on the drivers side of the tranny

Ok, he was talking about drilling a hole through it and sticking a bolt though, maybe thats what he did, i wasnt there. But you may be better off using that cup

Been driving mine without clips for about six years now without a problem. Of course I never have jumped it over anything yet. I think the strut travel restriction would keep the axles in the tranny. I would love to hear an actual trans design engineer explain their purpose.

I finally was able to remove both my half axles on my festiva but it wasn't until I removed the motor and had it sitting on a good surface. Then I could get at both half axles, pry, and pound lightly. I put pry pressure from opposite sides at the same time and rapped it with a light weight hammer. They both came out after a few hits each.
