  • 1991 Firing Order

So ive looked every where possible. I have a 1991 Festiva. I believe ive got the new plug wires out of order. There is probably something on the site that shows the firing order but i just cant find it. And all the diagrams i find on google just dont seem to match mine. If somebody could tell me the firing order and match it up to the cap I would greatly appricate it!

There is a raised mark on the distributor cap marking the #1 position.

I figured it out. Thanks yall. The old man had out a new distributor on the car. The car has a awful miss and has no power until the rpms get up higher. I can remove the 1st plug wire start the car and it doesnt change anything. Still runs with the awful miss. I can do the same thing with #2 plug and get the same results. If i do it with #3 or #4 it will not start. (#1 #2 #3 #4 as if you were looking at it from the front of the car). I've replaced everything electrical. Could the rotor be out of alignment? Like the ignition timing is off? How do i check this. Never messed around with Distributors really. Thank you.

You need to do a compression test, I bet the fire ring between 1 & 2 is allowing compression loss.

IIRC the rotor can be installed in any of three positions, so you have to pay attention to how it was oriented when you took it off.

That's what the metal rings in a head gasket are called.

                    1-3-4-2 counterclockwise

Use double quotes around a phrase or words that you want to keep together when performing a search.

Some will only go back in the right position. I forget which of mine is like that, but no disagreement that it should be noted

Alright I'll do a compression test. I'm a heavy equipment mechanic only trucks and cars I work on are newer. The rotor on mine will only go on the shaft one way. as soon as I can get my hands on a compression tester I'll give updates

I have discovered that the number 1 & 2 plug where fouled by oil. Cleaned them up put back in it and guess what ran fine. BUT now it smokes like a freight train. I'm going to go ahead and assume I need pistons & rings. Sound about right?

No, the cylinder walls are just washed down due to the fowled plugs. It should clear up soon.

It also idles high now but thats an issue ill address later.. wish this thing had a tach...(it will soon).. But why where they fouled with oil in the first place? Im hoping i don't have to pull the motor and start in on it. I would just like to drive the darn thing lol But i would assume if its getting enough oil bypassing the rings to foul the plugs i would get some interesting noises although It seemed to have plently of power also. So bad rings would equal loss of compression which would then equal loss of power right? Maybe it is weaker and i just dont notice it like maybe im underestimating the power of the little 4 banger. At idle it doesnt really seem to smoke. just when I give it fuel. And it is blue smoke. Never really been inside of too many engines. I'm a field mechanic. The shop boys handle most rebuilds. Thanks for being so helpful festYboy. And im dead serious when i say i had no idea my name was so similar to yours, As soon as I found this site i made a account lol
