  • 1991 Festiva issue

So I recently picked up a 1991 festival with 5 speed manual. While idling, I can shift into any gear without depressing the clutch and it does not die but will not move at all. There is a small grinding noise when I put it into any gear. Any ideas on what this could be? TIA.

Could be a couple things: broken input shaft, broken clutch splines, blown apart clutch plate, broken shift gate or fork.

First thing, close visual inspection of linkage and clutch fork. Then the trans has to come out.

Do you mean that shifting at idle doesn't move the car or the car will not drive at all even when shifting properly?
How does the shifter feel? Nice and tight H pattern or sloppy?
Also, how does the clutch feel when you press it in? Does it feel like it's engaging with the pressure forks? Or is the return spring the only resistance?
If the car does not drive, has reasonable shift feel, and has little clutch resistance, the throw out bearing could be seized, holding in the pressure forks (even just partially).
Let us know how everything feels and tell us the results of your inspection

Sounds like the shift linkage is not engaging the gears. Need to get under the car and inspect. Push and pull on rod to see what's going on. I guess you could put a video cam under the car and watch while shifting from inside the cab,
