  • Ring Seals

Is there any step by steps on how to check ring seals. I just put a new motor in but it wont start. Wife wants to kill me already because the car isnt working. So money is some what tight. Any help appreciated.

Compression test is how you would check the rings. What's it doing when you try to start it? Are you sure you have the ignition timing correct? When you say new motor, is it a brand new engine, rebuilt, used engine from another vehicle?

Compression test. Or if you're ok to spend a little more, leak down test.

First thing to check is your mechanical timing

Timing is good i am tdc on everything and i just did a compression test 1 has 0, 2 has 30, 3 has 15, and 4 has 30. And the motor is from another vehicle. Also it keeps backfiring out of cylinder 4.

It will not run with those compression numbers.

Does it mean that the rings are bad or could it be something else

Those numbers are so low I would try another compression gauge. Another possibility are valves that are either bent or sticking open. Even if the rings are worn you will have some compression.

What do the numbers need to be?

Try pulling the spark plugs and squirt a little oil down into the cylinder. By a little, about 2 ounces. Put the plugs back in and check the compression again. If the numbers come up substantially you have bad rings. If there is no change it sounds like a valve problem. Did you check the timing belt to see that the camshaft is turning?

They should be well over 100 psi but I have seen engines run with as low as 60 psi. Your engine won't run at the numbers you posted.

                      Compression numbers should be 140-190psi.
Sounds like something else is wrong

I never checked compression on an engine with a broken timing belt but I am thinking that would be my next check. If you pull the distributor cap and crank the engine you should see the distributor turn. Before you crank it over, unplug the wire going to the center terminal of the distributor cap and ground it while you are cranking it. This protects your coil.

I'm jealous of you seal level people. At over a mile high where I live the numbers are a lot lower.

Timing belt is intact. It was a tooth out of tdc but i fixed that last night. Everything as far as that goes it turns.
