Technically speaking you should not run 2 speakers to one channel because most of the time it will bump it down to 2 ohms but I have ran them like that before with no problems. If you wanted to play it completely safe then the "Correct" way to do it would be to run an amplifier or run them in Series so that it pushes it up to 8ohms.

If that doesn't make sense just let me know and I will try to break it down for you with some helpful diagrams

Firebush is right if you are supposed to have a 4ohm load on your reciever you need to run a 4 ohm speaker if you are supposed to have an 8 or 10 ohm load you need to run 8 or 10 ohm speakers.Running 2 x 4ohm speakers is roughly equivelant to running 1x 2 ohm speaker it will double your current draw, more heat more risk of damaging your equipment. I've seen my fair share of people do it it works just fine until the day it doesn't.
30 + Vehicle projects right now.7 Festiva/Mazda 10 GM IDK how many others, hope that helps explain all the stupid questions/shortcuts/interchanges etc. trying to liquidate so I concentrate on the good ones. Goal finish 1 amonth using as much stuff as I already have accumulated.

You could safely run it at 8 ohms but you get about half the power output to the speakers. You can buy 3 ohm speakers and run them in Parallel to make it 6 ohm but the are uncommon and more expensive and not worth the money/effort.

Looking into it today I learned that some Head Units may allow you to run 2 ohms on the rear channels because they are set up to be able to work with Subwoofers.

If you wanted to spend the money you could buy an amp to do it the right way. This NVX Amp is so small it can fit behind a the dash and never be seen or you can just mount a cheaper one under a seat and run the wires under the carpet.

Should be able to find what you need cheap though. With 6 or 8 outputs i mean. My first aftermarket sterio was like$50 and had a subwoofer output and 2 rca outputs in addition to the 4 speaker outputs. Its more common to have lots of speakers in cars now so i would think they should come with more than 4 outs now.

this is way over my head..
I don't think I'm going to do the door speakers - I'm just going to replace the headunit and the dash speakers/ maybe the rears but i'll wait to see how it sounds with just the fronts first.

I'm thinking of this headunit and speaker combo - what do you think? I read somewhere about an internal crossover and not to blow out the speakers by sending them bass? Is that something I should worry about?

            HU:

            Speakers:

I just picked the speakers because they were the same brand, don't know if they will fit or if the little small speaker in the center will hit the dash grill - if you have any other recommendations of speakers in that sort of < $40 price range let me know.

For the headunit i just wanted something with HD radio, bluetooth, and aux in ports. Don't really care about anything else

thanks all we got real side tracked here but it's helping me out a bunch

The radio looks fancier than mine, should be perfect for 4 speakers.
Those speakers look well matched to the sterio but the front cone may stick out too far to use the speaker covers in the front. You can just leave them out though if you dont mind how that looks.
Personally i would put bigger speakers in the rear-Lots of different ways to do it- but thats just me

These Rocksford Fosgate 4" Speakers don't stick out like the Pioneers and they are about the same price.

As for the Head Unit, if you do not need a CD player then I would suggest this Pioneer DEH-X5800HD. It is a little cheaper and has everything that you need.

The new head units will have equalizers built in that will allow you to limit how much bass the speakers can receive. It is called a High Pass Filter or HPF. With the Rocksford Fosgate 4 inch speakers I would set to 100Hz. It won't blow the speakers if you don't but it will make them "crack" and distort the sound making it sound crappy.

Yeah, that is a great deal for that Head Unit. I would order a Harness so that you don't have to cut any wires and try to figure out what wire goes where.

I recommend them to anyone that plans on putting in a new head unit, they make it a much easier install. You can do all of your crimping on the dining room table and then just plug and play.

Just don't buy them at Best Buy.... they charge about $30 for the something you can get for less than $10

Google scochse stereo installation components I used to carry their products in the shop. I can stll get it but none of us are close. They make all kinds of stereo install stuff, harnesses mounts faceplates etc. I can still get new speakers, amps, headunits, relays etc. but there are so many places on line I doubt I can save anyone enough money to make it worth anyones time. But always willing to try.
