  • Cooling fan working too often

    So I have changed the cooling fan switch, and the changed the thermostat. (one from oreillys) I did the proper procedures. The coolant temp gauge doesn't seem to go up to the middle like most cars. The fan turns on when the coolant temp is 1/3 way up. Is this common? How often does your fan turn on?

    The Festiva gauge can be really inaccurate. Try using a infra-red thermometer or similar to get an actual temp reading.

      Welcome to the forum!
      Temp gauges vary car to car and aftermarket thermostats like stant vary very widely on opening temps even if they all say 192 or 195f.
      Was the switch not working at all before?
      Whats the part number and brand of the switch you used?
      Fan is supposed to turn on at 207f iirc.
      On my car that is a little higher than i made the red mark in this photo.
      Also fyi ir guns are calibrated on a flat surface painted flat black. They vary based on quality but typically do not get an accirite reading on curved surfaces. Impossible to get a true reading with mine on round pipe or hose

        100% accurate? Probably not.

        Better than an unmarked gauge from a 25 year old sensor?

          I disagree. A $10 meat thermometer taped to the upper rad hose would be better.
          The emissivness of different parts of the engine is all over the map. Many spots arent .9-.95 like most ir guns are calibrated to, the curves mess with it and its very tempting to take readings up close which throws it off. At a proper distance most ir guns are reading a wider area than you want to on the engine and on and on.
          Ive tried with mine and yes you can get a true reading in particular spots but you need to have the temp verified by something else first.
          Its not little variations, im talking like 50 degrees F difference between spots that are actually within like 5f of eachother... i found it a real pain trying to get readings off my b3 with this.

          Is the fan coming on before the thermostat opens?

            The EVTM is wrong about which switch and wire color it is.
            As you can see in the diagram, the cooling fan switch serves as a ground for the relay.
            Make sure that you don't put any Teflon tape or other non-conducting sealant on the threads of the switch.

                It seems like the thermostat opens before the fan comes on, but it seems like not much time passes by and the fan turns on. If the thermostat is actually opening up at 190, technicallly, 207 isnt that far up ahead. I'm just trying to figure out if it's a common thing that the fan works so often. If it works during the winter rarely, imagine how much it will work during the summer. The fan switch part number is TS113

                  I changed the switch because the fan was turning on waay y too early. It was just loading up the alternator.

                    If the fan is still being erratic after you replaced the fan switch it's probably still the switch. Those aftermarket switches are pretty hit and miss on if they work correctly. This the part number for a oem mazda switch. They cost a little more but they work.

                      Even with a Mazda dual stage thermostat, mine runs on the cold side. My fan rarely comes on even in the summer. Just when I have the AC on or if I'm stopped for a long time in a drive thru. If your car is running at the right temp, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

                        Found out the problem! It was a clogged radiator. It was cooling partially and basically overheating. Both the thermostat and cooling fan switch were doing their job correctly.
