  • Roaring sound

    Just had some work done on my 89. Cv joints both sides, brakes all around, new discs up front and new wheel bearings all the way around. I'm still getting a roaring sound i thought it might have been the wheel bearings so I replaced them, but its still there, any thoughts on what it might be.

    Does it still make the noise when you put the car in Neutral while traveling at highway speed?

      Try to isolate the sound. Assume it's only when the car is in gear and traveling? One thing to try is to put the front end up on stands and run it in gear and in neutral. If there's a noise a length of garden hose or similar with one end in your ear can help locate the sound. Another thing to try is to rotate the tires and to drive on different kinds of pavement. Also driving beside a wall bounces the sound back at you so you can hear it better.

        I've had a similar sound for quite a while. On very rare occasions it goes away. Not often though. In gear, out of gear . Clutch in, clutch out. Motor off, motor running. Coasting or under power. Not CV joints or bearings. Sounds something like a noisy speedometer cable but it isn't that either. It is present down to about 2 or 3 MPH. Something related to forward motion or rotation. Have not yet isolated it. Could it be tranny bearing? Pilot bearing?

          Yeah mine still makes the noise with car in motion in gear or in neutral it doesn't matter

            So did the noise go away at all after the bearings were replaced or was it the exact same before and after?

            I would jack up each tire and spin it to see if you can here any grinding.

            It it isn't any of the bearings then another option could be the Alternator or AC Compressor Trans Bearings or Trans itself

              I would bet the rear bearings are overtightened. Have bearing nut loose. And dust cap off. Bolt tire on. Wiggle tire. Tighten bearing bolts till the tire stops having play. Back the bolt off just a little until there is just the tinyest bit of play. Stake bearing nut down there and your good to go

                ^^ also for overtight rear bearings I like to feel the hub after driving to see if it's warm. For this to work you can't use the brakes much as that heats up the hub as well.

                  Ive isolated where the sound is coming from, its the rear, put some new tires on in the rear and noticed that it was pretty hot and I hadnt driven the car that far what could it be thats causing that, those shoes are brand new

                    Tight rear bearings? Stiff hand brake pivots?

                      Also people have found rear "Ford Festiva" drums are too large. Yours might be rubbing but I don't know if that would cause a roaring sound. You might want to take it back to the shop that did the work and describe the symptoms to them.

                        The wheels are supposed to turn oretty easily once off the ground correct? Its a battle to get the wheels on the back to turn

                          Yeah they are supposed to turn pretty easily. You probably have the bearing nut torqued to tight or brake shoes are dragging. My guess would be the Bearings are too tight though.

                              I replaced my shoes on the '91 with genuine Ford shoes and they were too big. If I recollect I ended up grinding the shoes down just a bit in order to get the drums on. With the drums and wheels on I was barely able to turn the wheels. A few slow trips around the block and things loosened up a bit. The following day a few short 2-5 mile trips at slow speeds did the trick. I jacked up the rear of the car and the wheels spun freely. I know this doesn't sound very scientific nor will you find this procedure in any books but it worked for me. After you are able to freely spin the rear wheels go back and check the preload on the bearings. Ryan had posted the procedure a few numbers up on this thread. It is #7. Also FWIW old hard as a rock 12" tires can make a lot of noise going down the road. How are your tires?
