Thank you everyone for your advice and encouraging words, I'll be redoing the belt today making sure to get the crankshaft seal and alignment correct. I will learn from it and not make the mistake again so in that sense it was not a waste at all. Also Scottwebb, were you not able to get it past 2000 at all? mine will rev high if you are very light on the throttle, but not if you actually push on the pedal as you would during driving.

okay guys so i just redid the timing belt. I made absolutely sure that the notch on the crankshaft sprocket and the marks on the camshaft were aligned properly but for some reason the car will still not run properly, what else could be going on here?

EDIT: Did you turn the distributor back to the normal setting? Did you check Compression again?

When I did mine I lined it up perfectly as well and was still off one tooth. I ended up just taking Cam Sprocket off and turning the cam forward or backward one tooth and popping the belt back on. Pretty easy to do, just grab a Paint Marker or some regular paint and mark the belt and the cam with a line. Make sure no to destroy the key way on the cam sprocket since it is such a soft metal.

To make is easier I unbolted the engine mount on that side and jacked the engine up and then used an impact to get the sprocket off without the engine turning over, then bolt the sprocket back on without the belt, turn it forward a notch and then unbolt the sprocket again, put belt on the sprocket and use the sprocket to stretch the belt onto the camshaft.
