Factory A/C conversion to Dealer A/C

Hi guys. As I am getting close to the end of my full restoration of Silver Bullet, I ran into a conundrum. My LX has factory air conditioning. My A/C compresor is locked up. I am unable to find a replacement factory A/C compressor anywhere. Meanwhile, the dealer-installed A/C compressors are all over the aftermarket arena. Is it possible to install a dealer A/C compressor using Cherry Bomb's dealer-installed compressor mount, but utilizing the existing factory A/C lines and wiring? If not, I don't know what I am going to do for A/C in Silver Bullet.

I would think it would be simpler to just make the factory system work with the dealer compressor

You were correct that the lines are not compatible with the dealer A/C. I also found out from my Ford dealer that because my car was manufactured in February of 1988, the part number is a YC50. I am now back to square one. Nobody has a YC50 anywhere, and when I do see a listing, it is actually one of the dealer A/C compressors.

Suggestions, anyone?

If they're long enough you might be able to cut the YC style fitting off the factory hoses and crimp on the Sanden (dealer) style so you're able to use the dealer compressor. The Sanden is a more modern compressor and should work better with less power consumption. Hose ends are readily available, but you'll need to measure the hose size and compressor fittings to make sure you're getting the right ones.

Hose ends should be similar to these. They're available in different angles as well. Just posting these as an example, check the sizes/angles needed before ordering.

I am going to try a new Motorcraft clutch assembly for my particular compressor first. If it doesn't work, then I will try to change the fittings and put a dealer compressor on. If that doesn't work, I am going to gut all of the dealer A/C components off of Cherry Bomb and try to make them work on the Silver Phoenix.

(When I said my compressor was locked up, the pulley would not even spin on the compressor. Once I partially disassembled it, it spun. I am thinking a new clutch might fix the issue).

Beware that as old as these things are, the shaft seal may leak. That's what happened to mine. I got lucky and ordered a NOS factory compressor from rock auto and it has been working great for two years now.

I'm facing essentially the same issue. Some bozo stole the factory A/C compressor off my "Sunday best" Festy a while back.

Napa just told me that the factory compressor has a "single groove" pulley and is not available, while the dealer compressor has a "six groove" pulley and is likely a available.

I have several running Festies with factory AC and therefore don't want to change to dealer type.

Napa could not even tell me whether if I found a used factory compressor if it could be rebuilt or not.

For $112.00, it might be worth buying one of those YC56 ones from rockauto just to see if it is the right one. Worst that could happen is you return it and eat the shipping. Hell of a lot easier than swapping out the entire system!

The YC56 is not the correct factor air compressor for the Festiva. It has screw on hose fitting and bolts on with 4 bolts that go through the housing (two top and two bottom). It looks like this:

This remanufactured one on ebay has a 4 rib clutch/pulley but it can easily be switched to a single groove clutch/pulley.

You will need to remove the manifold from your old compressor and use it You will need 4 new o rings to put it back on.

Too late to edit my last post but I just found the compressor you need with a single groove pulley.
It is remanufactured and sold by Tech Choice parts (877 723 0112) They quoted me a price of $226.55 shipped to Anchorage. (Thats $80 shipping to Anchorage.. much less to the lower 48).

That sounds like what I need.

Just to be sure, attached are photos of the AC installation for my "WA 89 black" where the compressor was stolen, and my "WA 88 silver" which is intact.

Can anybody confirm that both of these are "factory" installations so the newly-found compressor can replace my stolen one?
