Shifter Spring

I just got done replacing the nylon bushings, the boot, and two ball bushings on my shifter.

I've been done with everything for almost 2 hours now, I CANNOT get the shifter's spring back into the hole. I get close but no cigar. What's the trick?

My thumbs are bleeding!
