  • Knocking Noise

I've had this knocking noise for a few months now. When I first heard it I thought it might be a rod knock. It only happens at low speeds while in a turn. I checked my Haynes Manual and came up with 3 possible reasons for this knock so, I sure its not a rod knock.

    1. Worn CV joints. ( I thought CV joints made a clicking noise when they go bad. I don't have a clicking noise though.)

    2. Worn side gear shaft counterbore in differential case.( What does this mean and, how do you fix this?)

3.Differential gear noise. (Do they mean transmission gear noise? Do I need to replace my tranny?)

It sounds like the knocking noise is coming from the right front of the car.

Thanking you in advance for your help, Rich

CV joints and tie rod ends/Lower control arms would be my guess

Roll the windows down and turn all the way and listen and feel as you turn the tight circle, CV will show this way.

The coil spring when broken will also make a sound, you can look at it over the tire.

Thanks for the info. I haven't checked out what is causing this noise yet. I thought if I had a bad cv joint, tie rod, or control arm, I would at least have a shimmy or some play in the steering wheel which I don't have. It drives straight down the road with no shimmy at all.

Not necessarily , mine had a torn CV the first 2 festiva events , never a pull ,no noise , no shimmy or vib .
Then it started knocking in a curve or a tight turn , it finally got bad , replaced it and the knocking noise is gone .
