  • White or yellow

I did a search on timing and not sure about the white vs yellow mark on the crank pully. Is the white mark tdc and the yellow pointing to the pin 10 degrees? It is an 89 fi.
When I ground the single conector by the brake booster it only makes the check engine light blink. Does not change the timing. Tryed it before and after I started the car. I dont understand what grounding this does. Does not change the timing.
Am I missing anything? Ground single wire next to brake booster, start car, point gun at crank pully, turn dist untill yellow mark lines up with pointer? White mark? Some people have said they set it at 8 degrees and others at 13. Should it be set at 10?

Sorry if this has been asked a million times. Probably should not be messing with it. Cant help it.

Oops. Did not see the sticker under the hood. One problem with it. They show the mark on the crank pulley having the white on the left and the yellow on the right. Mine is opposite. My guess is unhook the white wire, unhook and plug the lower hose on dist, set dial on timing light to 0,turn dist until the pointer lines up with the mark located on the right.

And would this be 8 degrees? 10?

    Sorry to double post.

I think the timing indicater is the pointer and that it is white from the factory.

In the picture on the hood it shows it pointing to the mark on the right (yellow) My mark on the right is white. The crank pully has 2 marks. One white (Right) one yellow(left) The label says yellow to pionter but show it pointing to the mark on the right. That is my question. Which mark on the pulley? The left or right? It is a 10 degree difference.

OK, the "indicater" is the white which is white so that it is easier to see and pick up and also gives you a reference point and then the yellow is the one you use to set the timing itself.

The white also shows you 10 degrees and spacial distances for your timing.

The left right I think is a non issue but I do see your concern. It may be that left front of the car vs right front of the car kind of thing.

So is the left front fender of the car the left side under the hood or the right side, the answer is the left fender is on the left but under the hood facing it is on the right, this has been going on since the very first cars and probably the buggies and wagons before them.

I may be wrong but this is what it appears to me, the yellow "alignment mark" we know is a fact though.

The yellow is tdc. I pulled number 1 plug and set it to tdc using a dial indicator and the yellow was at the pointer(notch on the left)
The picture on the decal shows it pointing to the notch to the right. This is 10 degrees and on my car it is painted white?
I then retimed it using the yellow mark as tdc and set the gun to 10 and adjusted the dist. Then just to double check I turned the gun to 0 and the white mark was at the pionter.

Also I noted the timing before I started messing with it and it is back to where it was. Not sure about the whole yellow thing? Should be notch on the left is tdc and notch on the right is 10 degrees. Paint them whatever color you want.

I just cant leave things alone. Car runs great but I must mess with something

Sorry to drag an old one out of the vaults, but this may help me out. On my crank pulley, there are no marks, either white or yellow. There is, however, a notch carved into the edge of the pulley. Does anyone know which of the two marks this might represent? Also, I have no white pointer on my timing belt cover. I have a series of lines. One is marked TDC, and the other 10 degrees. So I think I can assume what those mean.

It appears in my service manuals that the pointer on the timing belt cover is set much further to the left than the other timing marks are, and this area appears to be where my car is happiest when setting the timing using a timing light, and the mystery notch on my crank pulley.

                Any thoughts?

The notches are where the marks are supposed to be. Yours probably just wore off, or its covered in black gunk, hiding the color.

I'm going to assume that the notch is at the TDC mark, and set my timing using that. If I had two notches....well, that'd be easier.
