  • Fifth gear switch = PNP switch ?

    1990 L 1.3L efi, five speed, no a/c

I noticed an electrical switch on my clutch housing today that has one of the two wires off of it. I'm sure it isn't the reverse light switch cause that's on the transaxle case and besides my reverse lights work fine. So then I figured it might be the starter interrupt switch but I still have to depress the clutch to get the car to start. Now I'm not sure what it is. The disconnected wire doesn't seem to affect anything. It think the manual is calling it a fifth gear switch if I'm looking at the right one. Anyone know what the switch is/does that the loose wire goes to ? I can get a pic if it helps. Here tell of a PNP switch (park/neutral/position) but is that on a MTX?

My hanes manual calls it a park neutral switch i had to unhook it , it went bad, it started idleing up when i pushed the clutch in, so i just unhooked it runs fine without it. still dont no why a 5 speed needs a park neutral switch.

I can't find anything in my haynes other that what has been mentioned here already .
But I thought Mechanicaldj said there was a switch for 5 th gear that puts the ecu in a different mode ??

Some cars have a upshift light ?? would it be for that , or does that get a sig from somewhere else .

Thanks for looking packrat. I searched also. I'm afraid mechanicaldj is right. There has to be some reason its there. Probably kicks the ecu into super economy hyper drive or something ? Anyway here is a pic of damaged wire, the switch has the # 8501 on it.

Do the 4 speeds have it or is it a 5 speed exclusive?

I dont know, but being called a fifth gear switch Id say just the 5 speeds. Could be the fourth gear switch in four speeds for all I know. Ill Im sure of is that its a switch.

I done did figured that one out by my own self cause of them there two wires running all the way plumb up to it and things such as that there.

Hey when I put the 4 speed in my car there was an extra pair of wires (Probably because it was out of a carburated car). I just hook the other ones up just like the 5 speed (and let the other pair open) and no problems. The 4 speed does have the same switch. It is down on the right side around where the shift rod goes in. I notice the idle changes slightly between when it is in gear and when it is in neutral (for both the 4 and the 5 speed). Not sure what that is all about but I suspect it has to do with emissions. Maybe when it is in Nuetral, the computert is in close loop mode and when it is in gear- open loop mode (for those of you familiar with computer operations - If not, then basically it is either running on a set of information that resides in the prom or it is running off information from the oxygen sensor- basically with out getting into all the other sensors). The other switch is for the reverse lights (right side in the front)
