A little history on the problem:
91 FI 5spd festy, has been running fine. Ran alright last summer, although it had occasional stalling problems then but nothing serious and I upped the idle speed a little, cleaned the plugs all was well. It ran well all winter long, seemed like it idled high till it got warm, and it took a while to get warm, but i think thats just normal it ran fine and idled great once warm.
Now about 2 weeks ago when the warmer weather began to hit (a few days before OH V) it started stalling at idle. I was so busy i didn't have time to check anything and just drove it to OHstiva that way, it drove fine the whole way except for a few areas on the hwy it bogged down a lot, had to put it in 4th and floor it just to keep 55-65, but this "bogging down" only happened a few times and never lasted more than a minute or two. On the way home and since then (like another 5-ish tanks of gas) i haven't had that problem at all so I think that was just bad gas and not related to the stalling problem.
The problem and what I've checked:
It stalls when idling, at stop signs, when coasting for a long period, etc. It doesn't always die as soon as i put the clutch in, it just idles really low and then sputters and dies. Other times it seems like it dies almost right away.
I checked for vacuum leaks by spraying starter fluid around, and using soapy water on the PCV valve and stuff, couldn't find any vacuum leaks. ran my hand over all the vacuum hoses and everything seems good. I pulled the PCV valve with the car running and it has good vacuum, but little puffs of smoke were coming out of the VC, not sure if that should happen?
Next i checked the solenoid by the intake manifold, manual said it should have between 7.7-9.x ohms resistance. it had 8ohm, so i think thats OK. (i thought it was a little strange that it was measured on the wiring harness side of the plug, that doesn't make much sense to me?)
I also picked up a new O2 sensor thinking that may be it, but the O2 sensor in there is giving a reading in the specified range and i couldn't get it out w/o fear of stripping it so i haven't installed the new one.
Today i pulled the MAF. there is always a little oil in the intake tube when i pull it off, and i pulled it last week, and there was a bit. But when i pulled it again today about a week later there was a LOT of oil in it... after just a week!
so now i'm confused. where is that oil coming from? is it related to my idle problem? what else could be causing my car not to idle now, when it was fine a few weeks ago, and it still accelerates fine and runs fine just won't idle??
thanks all... sorry for such a long post.
